Second Report on the State of the World's PGRFA

Second Report on the State of the World's
Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

In 2002, the FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, at its Ninth Regular Session, agreed that work should progress on the development of the second report on the State of the World's Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

The Commission emphasized that the process for preparing the second Report must provide for national, regional and global analysis and perspectives, and agreed that the process should include the preparation of Country Reports.

To assist countries in this regard, the Commission requested FAO to prepare Guidelines (including a timeline) that would draw forth information on changes in national status that have occurred since the first Report
(Guidelines are also available in Arabic, French, Spanish and Russian).

Regional meetings will be held to review Country Reports and discuss common issues, if resources are available.

The Commission stressed that the process for monitoring implementation of the Global Plan of Action is an essential component of the process for preparing the second Report. It also considered thematic studies to complement information that would be provided in Country Reports and agreed that the second Report would be completed in 2008.
